There are two main types of dialysis, and the appropriate type is chosen based on several factors that you discuss with your doctor. Discover the types of kidney dialysis and the most important differences between them.

What are the types of kidney dialysis?

There are two types of kidney dialysis:

Hemodialysis

Hemodialysis is the most commonly used and common method of kidney dialysis. It is done by installing a connection (catheter) containing two tubes in the arm or neck area; where the blood passes through the first tube to the blood purification device, which removes toxins, waste, and excess fluids from the body. Then the blood is returned after purification to the body through the second tube. (1)

During this procedure, blood pressure is closely monitored, and accordingly, blood flow to and from the device is adjusted. (2)

Types of Kidney Dialysis

Peritoneal dialysis

In this method, the blood is purified inside the body through the peritoneal membrane located inside the abdomen. Where a thin catheter is connected in the abdomen to the peritoneum, and a special solution is introduced into it to help remove waste, toxins and excess fluid from the blood. After a while, this fluid is disposed of in a bag tied outside the abdomen and replaced with new fluid. (3)

A less common type is available that is used in the intensive care unit for people with acute kidney failure known as continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), where the patient is connected to a blood purification machine for 24 hours. (4)

What is the difference between the types of dialysis?

Here is an explanation of the basic differences between the types of dialysis: (5)(3)

The difference

Hemodialysis

Peritoneal dialysis

Location of the procedure

In the hospital in kidney dialysis clinics

In the hospital or at home

Number of sessions

3 - 5 sessions per week

Daily with the number of sessions depending on the time of the procedure, it can be repeated 4-6 times a day or performed overnight.

Time spent in each session

approximately 2 - 4 hours

30 - 40 minutes per session for 3-5 hours per day

Different activities

The person cannot do his different activities, as he must remain sitting or lying down. But he will enjoy other days without sessions, when he can do his activities normally.

If the person does the procedure while sleeping, he can do his different activities during the day without disruption.

Nature of food before the session

The doctor will ask you to limit drinking water, eating salty foods, and foods that contain a high percentage of potassium and phosphorus.

It does not require a large restriction on the amount of water and salts as in hemodialysis. The patient will need a larger amount of protein.

Pros

Because it is done in the hospital, you will be surrounded by a specialized medical team to take care of you.

You can do it at home, you will not need frequent visits to the doctor, and you have more freedom to practice your normal life.

Cons

You may suffer from low blood pressure and dizziness during and after the dialysis session

Dialysis must be done daily, and the catheter tube will remain visible in your abdomen all the time. You may notice an increase in your original weight, and you may need hemodialysis after a while.

Which is better, hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis?

Both types are equally effective for most patients, and the choice of which type depends on several factors discussed by the doctor and the patient, including: (6)

  • The patient's general health.
  • Kidney functions.
  • Home situation and the nature of the patient's life.
  • Personal preferences.
  • The patient's ability to perform the dialysis steps and fully understand them.
